And, her head explodes

Turned in my moot court application yesterday and signed up for an audition time. I'm also trying out for the trial team and went to a meeting about that last night. Moot court requires reading a 25 page brief and prepping a 5-6 minute oral argument. Trial team requires reading a 60 page case packet and prepping a 3 minute cross examination and an 8-10 minute closing argument. Tryouts are the same week. The likelihood of getting onto either is roughly 15% (Math peeps - does that mean I have a 30% chance of getting onto one if I tryout for both?) Bonus for trial team: there are TWO rounds of tryouts. So much fun to look forward too.

And, our civ pro professor went ahead of our syllabus by 2 cases yesterday and assigned another 30 page case. So, last night was fun.

And, final bitch: I'm getting sick.

how do you figure 15% for moot court? they accept way more people than trial team! :) I don't think the percentage works out to a 30% chance of getting onto either, though I think you might have a 2% chance of being offered both.

either one would be a thousand times more beneficial to you than a journal, except maybe HLJ. but that's a topic for another day.

True, but far fewer people try out for trial team. My loose number crunching is 6 out of 40 make it on the trial team and 45 out of 200 make it on moot court.

Glad to hear your input about the journal. We'll twalk.

I think you should start your own team. I don't know what it would be as appeals and trials are already taken, here are some half baked ideas. Mind you these are based on my (limited) experience and law and order.

-Deposition team (learn how to be a jerk team)
-Alternative dispute resolution team
-Stenographers United
-Ordering take out team
-McCoy style closing arguement team
-Scotch in the DA's office team
-Animal advocacy team
-Sea Lion feeding team
-Mock SF government team (hey a bucnh of law students could run this city better than those stupid supes, and you could take anyone who didn't get on to anything. There is PLENTY of room for a mock government)
-Academic decathalon

I think the general odds of getting on trial team are still lower than moot court, though, also b/c of the nature of the people who try out. People who try out for trial team really want it... but a lot more people try out for moot court simply b/c it's not a very high barrier to trying out and b/c it's something a lot of people are doing. (The lemming effect, once again.)

So you can swing it more in your favor by doing well at your oral for class (which doesn't mean winning, necessarily), getting a rec from your instructor, and then doing well at your tryout. :)
